FOREST EDGE CONTRAST EFFECTS ON BATS (CURRENT)
We aim to assess the effects of contrast in forest edge bat communities. We are evaluating it by comparing bat communities in nine forest edges, three edges with coffee plantations, three edges with pastureland and three with rubber tree plantations in the continuous forest in Sooretama and Linhares, state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. Bats are being sampled using mist nets and acoustic surveys. Collaborators: Ana Carolina Srbek-Araújo & Márcio Henrique Almeida University Vila Velha |
VULNERABILITY MAP FOR BRAZILIAN ENDANGERED SPECIES (2015-2017) We developed a framework integrating species distribution models to extinction threshold theory. We assessed species and landscape vulnerability by considering seven types of human-impacts for threatened mammal species from the Brazilian Cerrado. We found a spatial match between climatic-suitable areas and highly-impacted landscapes, and that range-restricted species exhibit higher variability in vulnerability. EFFECTS OF HABITAT LOSS AND FRAGMENTATION ON BRAZILIAN BATS (2011-2015)
We accessed the influence of habitat amount and fragmentation on bat activity, occupancy, and species richness in the Brazilian Cerrado at a landscape scale. We found that habitat amount positively influences bat activity, but fragmentation negatively influences bat species richness. We also found species-specific responses to both variables, with small canopy fruit bats responding positively to habitat amount, while small aerial insectivores respond negatively to habitat fragmentation. Only vampire bats responded to variables measured at the local scale, negatively to local canopy cover. BATS FROM THE STATE OF ESPÍRITO SANTO, SOUTHEAST BRAZIL (2006-2008)
We compiled published and unpublished data on the distribution of bat species in the state of Espírito Santo. Data was obtained from scientific articles, museums, university collections and theses. We also surveyed bats in the State Park Paulo Cesar Vinha, in Ecological Area of the Zen Monastery of Ibiraçu and in the municipality of Alfredo Chaves. THE IMPORTANCE OF WOODED STREETS FOR URBAN BATS (2007-2008)
We captured bats in urban parks, wooded streets and non-wooded streets in the urban area of Vitória, state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. We found more species in urban parks, however large frugivores were also found in wooded streets indicating that they can be used as corridors between parks for some fruit bat species.
